I think the theme of "About Effie" is not to give up hope. In the text, Effie is always waiting for someone. She always keeps the faith that the one who she is waiting for would come to her. I think the author tried to show readers that theme through Effie. The author might want readers to achieve their hopes.

The one whom Effie is waiting for might be God or Jesus. In the text, it calls the one who Effie is waiting for 'him.' In the Bible, we call God him. Don't you think they are similar? I think they are.

As I said in the question 1, it might represent fro God.

2. Effie says that 'He' would find her.
It means 'He' or God can find one who believes in them anywhere.
3. Effie says if there is thunder, he would come.
I think it means God is powerful, because ,as you know, when you hear a word thunder, you would think something strong.

I think they can. Non-Christian authors can reveal truth about God's world. Though they are not Christian, they can describe God's world by using morals and themes. Those are about the Bible.

The character I admire is Bill Gates. He is chairman of the Micro Soft. Why I admire him is that he is one of the most successful business man in the world. To succeed he challenged in many fields. Along with the money he has made, he donates his money a lot. If I were him, I would not do that so. That point is what I admire him most.

The clues that setting can reveal about the theme of a short story are, I think, time and characters' action. Through such things, we can guess themes of stories. Characters' actions and dialogues are different in each setting. As you know, all stories do not take place in the same time. For example, some stories take place in modern time, but some do not. Also, the actions of the characters in the stories taking place in modern time are different from the actions of the characters in the stories not taking place in modern time. So each of the stories has different theme.

Authors drop clues about characters by showing readers characters' actions and conversation. Sometimes authors show readers the theme directly. By the authors' actions and conversation, we can guess the theme. How the actions and conversation lead readers to the theme of a story is that readers can guess what the actions and conversation imply.

The strongest setting I have ever encountered in my life is Japan. When I was young, I went to Japan with my family for sightseeing. While I was in Japan, I learned that there were many cultures in the world. I learned many things in Japan. That is why I choose Japan as the strongest setting.

1. A literary theme is the message about human life and philosophy. It is similar with moral, but it is the main view of the characters and plot. It is an universal belief in the all over the world. In Aesop’s fables, there are many kinds of stories including common theme. For example, “Don’t lie,” is from “The shepherd”. “Slow and steady wins the race,” is from “The Hare and The Tortoise”. “No matter how small it is, it is useful for something,” is from “The Lion and The Mouse”. Such themes are that we can learn from literatures. They reveal how we should live harmoniously and wisely from the characters. They make authors communicate with the real world.

2. The theme of my like is “Do one’s best.” I think doing one’s best is better than doing nothing. I am always trying to do my best. Even though I am not good at English, I always try to speak English. However I do not always try to do my best. If I do not want to do something, I do not even try it. I think I should not do such thing. From now though there is something I do not want to do, I will try to do my best. For “Do one’s best” is the theme of my life.

3. In my opinion, the theme of God’s plan for this world is “keep one’s promise.” In Bible, God always kept his promises. There is a Bible verse, "The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; his kingdom will never end" (Luke 1:33). He send Jesus to fulfill the promise he had made with Mary. He also made Rainbow to keep the promise he made with Noah. He always keeps his all promises. That is why I think the theme of God’s plan for this world is “keep one’s promise.” However, it is not only God’s theme, but also our themes. Also we should keep our promises. I mean we should keep the promise we make with God.


1. First, look at the title of a short story carefully. Maybe you can imply the theme of the story from the title. Secondly, as you read the story, read carefully what main characters do. Then read all story carefully. Especially, read the resolution part carefully. Usually authors write theme in the resolution. Find where authors write their thoughts. There will be a sentence like ‘when I saw something, I thought something.” This sentence can include the theme. If there is something repeated, that also could be the theme. This is the way I find a theme of a short story.

2. I think the theme of “The Utterly Perfect Murder” is “do not care about the past.” Ralph always concerned about what Underhill did to him. He tried to kill Underhill because of that reason. However, when he saw Underhill, he realized that he was wrong. These days, in Korea, a famous singer who is a Korean resident in America was forced to get out of Korea. For he blamed Korea 4 years ago. Actually he did not, but Koreans mentioned his deed which he did 4 years ago. He came to Korea to achieve his dream, but he went back to America due to what he did. However, I think that it does not matter what he did. He likes Korea now. Presence is more important than the past.

3.They are a little bit similar, but there are some differences in the meanings. Moral shows what is right and what is not right in our perspectives. It teaches us. Theme is just a main idea within a literary work. It also teaches us, but does not demand learning what is wrong or not. For example, in “The Hare and The Tortoise”, the theme you can learn is “Slow and steady wins the race.” However, the moral you can model is the tortoise should have waken up the hare. It is not fair. The tortoise’s behavior is not right in my opinion. Theme is common view of our lives, but moral depends on our judgement. It is the difference theme with moral.

4. Yes, it is. In the Bible, it says Jesus sacrificed for us. It is a theme statement for God’s story. It is not only a theme statement of John, but also whole of the Bible. God sent his only son, Jesus, to us, because he loves us and wants to save us from sins. In the literature, we can find a literature having a same theme as the Bible.

--> A metaphor is an imaginative way of describing. It is comparing something else which is similar.It is comparing things not using like or as. For example, "I am a pig" is a metaphor. It means I am fat like a pig.
A simile is expression of describing a person or something with another similar thing. It is comparing things using like or as. It is a little bit different from metaphor.For example, "he eats as a pig" is a simile. It means he devours food.

1. Why do authors use figurative language?

--> At first, reasons why authors use figurative language are that they can make their sentences meaningful. Figurative language implies many meanings. Those are depend on your experience, and imagination. Secondly speaking directly in the text makes readers bored. You can feel more realistic than the real world. You can see, hear, smell, feel, and taste vividly.
If authors use figurative language, they leave room for readers to imagine the sentences. And by imagining, they can get various of results of authors' purpose.
Finally, but mostly, authors can emphasize and form the connection between readers and characters in the text. So readers give themselves up in the books.

--> In this metaphor, it says God is a shepherd. This metaphor means that God is our master of people. We can imply that we are sheep of God from the metaphor. Sheep should follow their masters. In other words, people should follow God. And it also said we have all we need. It means God has given everything we need. God gave us water, sky, animals, land and lives. Those are all we need. So we better listen to him.

--> The beauty I think is inner beauty. Most people see only appearance. Appearance is just how you look like. But inner beauty is like one's honesty, morality, or wisdom. They are the most important thing we need to live these days. Of course, appearance is important as well, but they affect you a little. Inner beauty affects most of yourself. Though you are handsome, or beautiful, if you are not moral, it is no good. morality which stands for the inner beauty is the most important factor of a person.

--> When we read, we feel the sympathy. So we can understand te situation and circumstance around the characters from the text. If I were in the character's situation, what would I do? Then we try to figure out our own resolution. We make background of the literature a real thing. So we connect ourselves with characters, and accept them naturally.

1. Reader response analysis is a kind of connecting oneself with a character form text. Like comparing yourself and the character. For example, when you read a book, you would feel the same with the character from a text. Then you respond to it. And you also analyze the character. These processes are Reader response. First step is just reading book carefully. As you read the book, you will find the character in the same situation with you. Then analyze the character. Finally, respond to the character. That is all you have to do for reader response analysis.



2.Reader Response can open our eyes to more truth as we read.



3. If you interact or connect with literature, you can enjoy the literature more. Just reading is boring. But connecting yourself to the literature makes it interesting to read literature. Predicting the ending is also one of the reader response i think. To compare your ending and the ending of the literature can also be enjoyavle. Finishing your reading, just write about what you read thinking about the character from the text. It will be very fine.



4. The book I read recently is "The Call of The Wild". It is about a dog which is a main character of the book. I read it when I came to TCIS. As I read the book, I made some connections with the main character. He had to get used to everything around him. I could not get used to new surroundins. I learned that I should get used to the everything. I tried to speak in English and get along with others. And the other thing I learned from the book is that we should be strong to survive. If you have a weak will, you would not be able to live in 21st century.

Jesus is the begging of everything in the world. He is the first word of the word as well. Jesus is our predecessor for the first time. He made all the things, all the lives, and the light of the world. We can not exist without him, for he gave birth to us.
Through his messenger, he announced that he created every thing in the world and that we would be blessed. He shines the darkness, and we never know the darkness at all.
